What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy is a function based program that targets the structures of the oral cavity and the facial muscles. Think physical therapy for the face! It is done through a series of individually tailored exercises, patient awareness, and reduction in muscular compensations. The goal of Myofunctional Therapy is to help restore normal function by correcting improper muscle movements, teaching correct breathing, swallowing and chewing patterns and improving airway health.

This therapy is used to manage a variety of functional and structural disorders including:

  • Tongue Tie

  • Tongue Thrust

  • Low tongue posture/open mouth posture

  • Clenching and grinding

  • Mouth breathing

  • Snoring/sleep apnea

  • Headaches/neck pain

  • Anterior open bite

  • Habit elimination such as thumb sucking and nail biting

These dysfunctions can significantly affect sleep quality, chewing, swallowing, oral health, facial development, growth and more. Treating Oral Myofunctional Disorders can be beneficial at any age, however, addressing these issues in childhood can promote better function, proper growth of facial structures, and straighter teeth, thus ensuring a better quality of life.
